Long touted as the go-to accessory for celebrities aiming to hide from the paparazzi, the humble baseball cap is quickly entering the mainstream as the ultimate fashion status symbol. First there was Jeremy Strong's character Kendal Roy in Succession and his signature, quiet luxury, cashmere Loro Piana baseball cap. Kylie Jenner teamed one with a ball gown on the Met Gala red carpet in 2022. Hermès sent monochromatic looks with matching caps down the runway for their autumn winter 2023 show. And more recently Taylor Swift made a case for embracing the ‘dad cap' by donning a Ralph Lauren cotton chino cap.

Suddenly the baseball cap is everywhere – in the gym, out shopping, at the airport. The look du jour is a polished form of preppy in one solid colour and a varsity-style logo from a favourite sporting team (the New York Yankees symbol continues to endure), coffee shop, hotel or fashion brand.

In terms of practicality, the accessory is particularly suited to airport style and is part of my personal go-to outfit formula for what to wear on a plane. Not only does a cap neatly hide all sorts of greasy hair sins, but it also helps to block out overhead light for when you want to take a snooze. Keep the look polished with a smart matching loungewear set in a neutral colour.
