Escape Routes: Australia's Daintree Rainforest

Our new series of podcast episodes are out now – with a deep focus on sustainability, presented by Mastercard. Learn about Australia's Daintree National Park, where land is finally being handed back to Indigenous people
Escape Routes Australia's Daintree Rainforest

It’s thought to be the oldest continuously surviving rainforest on earth, where dinosaur-like cassowaries roam among ferns the size of elephant ears, yet Australia’s Daintree National Park isn’t just a natural wonder. It’s also, as Lizzie Pook discovers, an important cultural site for its Indigenous owners, the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people. As the national park is handed back to its original custodians, Pook meets some of the Kuku Yalanji people who are pioneering a new kind of tourism here, from guides to spear-fishermen and the leader of an Indigenous cultural centre.
