Condé Nast Traveller and The Fish Hotel are teaming up to give away a two-night midweek stay for two in a Hideaway Hut. The prize includes supper for The Hook on one night and a 60-minute private clay shooting session with the Farncombe Adventures team. Travel is also covered up to £150, if prizewinners travel by rail.
In the 500-acre Farncombe Estate, The Fish Hotel is a 66-key back-to-nature retreat in the heart of the Cotswolds where families, couples and groups of friends unite in the cosy huts and quirky treehouses to unwind and escape the worries of fast-paced modern life.
Contemporary hotel rooms in a handful of the properties dotted around the grounds range from neutral, dog-friendly medium rooms to veranda rooms ideal for young families. If more space is required, the suites are perfect – wake up to views across the Vale of Evesham and beyond from the small suites, or snuggle up by the wood-burning stove in more extensive suites.
Hideaway Huts are bespoke hand-crafted sanctuaries hidden among the grounds. Move freely from the double bed to the roll-top bath for bubbly soaks before heading to dinner, or shower off after long walks through the countryside in the separate en-suite and shower. Then, in the lounge, kick back in an armchair or on an L-shaped sofa in front of the stove for the ultimate stress-free night.
In fact, in the evening, there’s no need to leave the comfort of the Hideaway Huts – just order supper via room service to be enjoyed on the terrace before slipping into the hot tub with a glass of wine and looking up towards the stars.
The main lodge is home to Hook, where Martin Burge (formerly of Whatley Manor) oversees a menu focused on seafood classics done spectacularly well. Laidback but luxurious, the menu celebrates the best of British where possible – think mains such as Cornish mussels in a white wine and parsley sauce, battered haddock served with seaweed fries, and comforting desserts like sticky toffee pudding. Elsewhere, lounges are the best places to sip on a morning latte or a Cotswolds-brewed craft beer before an evening of feasting – food is also available in social areas, and groups are welcome to rest while sharing pizzas and small plates.
A sense of adventure and willingness to embrace nature is vital to making the most of any stay at The Fish. Aim high at clay shooting sessions, take to the tennis courts, get up close with the owls in a falconry masterclass, or learn how to pilot a hovercraft on a whistlestop adventure of the grounds. Should the drizzle impede the al-fresco fun, yoga classes are also available.
