Spending a summer weekend in a field, rocking out to big-name artists and struggling with tent poles at one of the legendary UK festivals is a quintessentially British rite of passage. These weekends have their ups and downs, for sure – a cold drink would be nice once in a while – but there's no denying the fun that can be had while pebble-dashed in a light sprinkling of mud.
The UK festival scene is booming once again, and there's something to suit every taste. Surfing to the sound of pop acts – Boardmasters is best. Bucket list ticks – Glastonbury (if you can get a ticket). From electronic rave-style sessions to jazz weekends and everything in between, these are the best festivals in the UK this summer.
Wilderness, Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire

Best for: pure boutique vibes
Wilderness has built up quite a loyal following over the years, and it’s not hard to understand why once you’re in its sprawling, magical woodland playground housed within the Cornbury Park estate. Big-name indie headliners rub shoulders with hip alternative acts, comedians, authors and more than a few great chefs, meaning that the food offering at Wilderness really is second to none. For added indulgence, head in the direction of the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Garden for lively DJ sets and a buzzy atmosphere. Dance the afternoons away and raise a glass of the iconic brand's signature fizz before feasting at a long banquet supper. IHG's Hotel In The Wild has also returned for another year, bringing its whimsical hotel style popup to the grounds – expect cosy chill out areas, surprise entertainment sets, light bites and all-round good holiday vibes.

Best for: hands-in-the-air dancing bliss
Still going strong after more than two decades, Creamfields is an essential date on the clubbing calendar for many electronic-music devotees. It’s angled as the biggest dance festival in the UK, attracting tens of thousands of club-loving punters to the site (located between Liverpool and Manchester), so be prepared for a few crowds. Unsurprisingly, it’s very much a DJ-driven weekend, with some of the biggest selectors on the planet spinning the tunes, which focus largely on house, techno and trance, but also repping disco, drum’n’bass and underground sounds. There’s not so much in the way of activities or workshops here, as Creamfields is far more for the dance-dedicated party purists.

This cool kid of the London festival scene has already become something of an essential date for lovers of alternative sounds. 2023's lineup saw Stormzy, The Strokes, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs take some of the big billings, supported by up-and-coming artists from a wide range of genres.

In an age of commercial, carefully targeted festivals, End of the Road stands out as a true original. Akin, perhaps, to Green Man Festival but a little noisier, this emerges from the undergrowth on a Dorset estate where peacocks roam, and a sense of magical realism settles over the countryside for a long weekend. It’s expertly curated with impeccable attention to detail and a bagful of surprises – it can be adventurous and avant-garde while maintaining a real sense of community (the kids will love it as much as their forty-something parents).

One of the oldest popular musical festivals in the world, Reading first launched in 1961 as the National Jazz Festival. Since then, it's successfully adapted to new music tastes and trends and is bigger than ever. Reading Festival's little sister, Leeds launched in 1999, with the same acts performing on different days. It's a rite of passage for younger festival-goers in particular.

A serious contender for the most beautiful UK festival setting with its location in the Welsh Brecon Beacons, Green Man has managed to retain its independent, arty ethos, despite growing in popularity over the years. There are festivals that have a bit of a theme to them, and then there’s Boomtown. This wonderland of an event goes so deep into its ever-evolving immersive plot that it’s difficult to know where the story stops and where reality begins, particularly after partying with the gleefully chaotic hordes for a few days. The result is a brilliantly imaginative experience that’s as much about production, performers and being part of the many ‘districts’ as it is about the music, which goes in heavy on beats and bass, alongside dub, reggae, soul, disco and some punky live acts.

Still independent, Shambala embraces the spiritual side of festival-going more than most, while still offering a full-blown party atmosphere for those who want it. Timber is one of the UK’s most sustainably minded festivals, held in the green embrace of the National Forest in the Midlands – the UK’s newest forest, created to rewild an industrial wasteland. It’s not one for twenty-something hedonists: this is a low-key, family-friendly event that mixes music and DJ sessions – this year guest-curated by Lamb’s Lou Rhodes – with spoken-word and dance performances, talks (plenty on the great outdoors and conservation), wellness (plenty of meditation, yoga, forest walks and sound healing) and workshops – from banana art and foraging to making a protest banner. Oh, and there’s a sauna and ice plunge new for 2024. Excellent for multi-generational groups and young families, but also for anyone seeking a more thoughtful festival experience, this is a lot of fun – and you may learn something. Unlike some festivals we could mention, you’ll return feeling rested and revived.

Known as the little sister of the now sadly defunct Bestival and dreamt up by the same creative minds (DJ Rob da Bank and wife Josie), Camp Bestival leaves behind some of the chaos of its elder sibling and goes in big on family vibes, but still with lots to offer revellers of all ages. Acts in previous years have included Jess Glynne, The Human League, DJ Yoda and Sister Sledge. As you’ll have guessed, there’s also an incredible amount of activities available to children, making it a firm family favourite. The website is a great place to start for families looking to get in on the action, with guides on camping with kids and safety guides.

Considering it's one of the newer festivals on our list, We Out Here has already gathered hugely positive feedback and a sizeable buzz, partly thanks to the fact that universally respected DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson is in the musical driving seat. Along with his Brownswood Recordings crew and Worldwide FM, Peterson curates an exemplary line-up covering jazz, house, Afrobeat, disco, soul, drum’n’bass and other forward-thinking sounds.

Steeped in musical history thanks to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell and The Doors playing there back in 1970, the Isle of Wight Festival leans more toward big-draw names rather than counterculture legends these days, but it remains a massive event nonetheless. Aside from the music, you’ll find comedy, film screenings, theatre performances, a wide range of food and plenty to keep families happy.

Set in a vast green space, Parklife has evolved into a UK festival stalwart. Glastonbury Festival is top of the list for many a festival-goer, and for good reason. If you think you don’t like jazz, the idea of a jazz festival may not sound so appealing, but at Love Supreme, soul, funk, blues, reggae, and R&B are also in abundance, plus various upbeat DJ sets keep things going well into the night. Of course, if you do dig jazz, Love Supreme is a no-brainer, as scene legends will be rubbing shoulders with exciting up-and-comers. Previous line-ups have included Lauryn Hill, Jimmy Cliff, Gladys Knight, The Cinematic Orchestra and Louie Vega, and the festival all takes place in the luscious grounds of Glynde Place, an Elizabethan manor house in the South Downs that couldn’t look any more picture-perfect. There will also be a wellbeing and yoga area, film screenings in the Jazz Lounge, a kids’ area, a pop-up record shop from Rough Trade and the chance to take a morning dip in the Glynde Pool.
